Exploring the Effects of VR-Based Visual Perturbations on Postural Control & Multisensory Reweighting in Older Adults

Can I Be A Participant?

We hypothesize that, after several weeks of training, standing balance and gait parameters will indicate increased stability, and that a distinctive VR-based visual perturbation stimulus will provide a mechanism to quantify multisensory reweighting (MSR) in older adults. This study utilizes immersive virtual reality (VR) to improve postural control and balance in older adults. The proposed thesis research examines the effects of VR-based training and assessment on balance and MSR in aging individuals. Our aims are (1) to obtain new knowledge on the effects of VR-based training on standing balance (2) to obtain new knowledge on the effects of VR-based training on walking/gait (3) provide multiple weeks of repetitive training, and by investigating older adults’ MSR. Aims 1 and 2 involved a 6-week VR-based balance training exercise, twice per week for 10 older adults (70-80 years old) and 7 younger adults (20-30 years old). Pre- and post-training assessments included: Clinical assessments like the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) or Activities specific Balance Confidence (ABC), Quantitative assessments like center of pressure (COP) measured by force plate or motion capture. Here, we propose a distinctive, multidirectional immersive VR stimulus to study MSR in older adults. The overall outcome of this research will be a new understanding tied to VR’s effects on motor control and sensorimotor integration in the aging population. Further, this research holds the potential to lead to clinical rehabilitation impacts for other balance-deficient groups.

  • Individuals aged 60-80 can be participants for the older cohort

  • Individuals aged 18-38 can be participants for the younger cohort 

  • Individuals who consider themselves healthy with no health or medical conditions impairing the balance or walking

  • Attend a 1 hour session 

    • these sessions are scheduled for the participant's convenience ​

  • Participants must wear reflective markers for motion capture recordings​

  • Participants will preform a series of standing balance and walking assesments, with and without virtual reality

    • those prone to motion sickness may not want to participate in this study​
