Aliya Newby

Aliya Newby has a bachelor’s degree of science in biomedical engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering with concentration in biomedical engineering, both from The University of the District of Colombia. Her Master's Thesis Project was An investigation of subjective, audio-visual features toward the quantification of speech. Now she is a doctoral candidate in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her research has focused on engineering approaches to speech rehabilitation applications. Her Doctoral thesis project is  An Investigation of Pediatric Impaired Speech: Characterizing Objective Speech Features and Data-Driven Speech Diagnostics. She is a member of the BMES, NSBE, SWE and ASME. Aliya spends her free time exploring artistic outlets, learning about different philosophies, and providing and seeking mentorship

Oluwasola Okhuoya

Oluwasola Okhuoya is one of our Ph.D. Candidate in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology, here at The University of Massachusetts Lowell. He attended the University of the District of Colombia for his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, with a Biomedical Engineering Concentration, and B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. Past research was focused on Comparative Analysis of Virtual Reality and Robotic-Assisted Balance Training: Effects on Balance Performance and Confidence in Older Adults and Evaluation of a Prosthetic Arm for Transradial Amputation in Bimanual Activities. Oluwasola’s research interests are Application of virtual reality for assessing or rehabilitating patients, Alzheimer’s disease, as well as research involving balance and gait disorders. His Doctoral Thesis project is titled  Biometric Feature Characterization for the Classification of Alzheimer’s Disease Using Machine Learning Models. In his free time Oluwasola enjoys Gaming, Sports, Music, and Fishing. 

Oshin Wilson

Oshin Wilson has a bachelor’s degree of science in biomedical engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering, both from The University of the District of Colombia. Now she is a doctoral candidate in Biomedical Engineering & Biotechnology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her research has focused on biomechanics, rehabilitation, virtual reality and concussions. Her master’s thesis project was titled “Investigating the Effects of Virtual Reality-Based Training on Balance Ability and Balance Confidence in Older Adults.” Her current doctoral research is on “Investigating the Effects of Concussion on Balance Performance and Sensory Reweighting in Athletes.” She is also an active member of several professional organizations, including the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), and the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). With her free time Oshin enjoys content creation, fashion, volunteerism, mentorship, and traveling.

Roni Romero

Roni Romero is a Ph.D. Candidate in BMEBT, at UMass Lowell. Attaining his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a Biomedical Engineering Concentration and his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, both from the University of the District of Colombia. His current project, which will be his thesis, is exploring the Effects of Virtual Reality-Based Visual Perturbations on Postural Control during Standing Balance and Gait in Older Adults. Previously he has spent his time Investigating Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) Spacesuit Effects on Balance and Gait. Roni’s research interests are Furthering balance and gait research using VR, Next-gen prosthetics (i.e. sci-fi or cyberpunk style  prosthetics), and Zero G or simulated zero G studies. With his free time, he enjoys VR development and sports like soccer, football, basketball, and Formula 1.

Visalakshi Chockalingam

Visalakshi Chockalingam, Ph.D. student in Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

She holds a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology (BMEBT) from UMass Lowell and a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, India.

Her doctoral research focuses on Neuromuscular Coordination and Posture Control in Concussed Athletes, with a particular emphasis on muscle synergy. Her broader research interests span biomedical imaging, ultrasound-based muscle analysis, concussion assessment, biomechanics, and combination medical devices. Past projects have included ultrasound imaging of muscle dynamics, laser speckle rheology for viscoelastic characterization, and the development of wearable and economical electrochemical detectors. Outside of the lab, Visalakshi enjoy reading novels, painting, and traveling to explore new cultures and experiences.

Julia Bruce

Julia Bruce attained her BS. In Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in medical devices from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She was introduced to Dr. Thompson through an NSF funded internship at the University of the District of Colombia. In the Laboratory she wears many hats; assisting on data collection, managing the social media and even design work. Her interests include reading novels, cooking, traveling and doing crochet.

Alexei Kraytman

 Alexei Kraytman is a Computer science and psychology double major at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Alexei is passionate about looking into how technology can assist with fitness and sport performance. Currently in his free time he is investigating into how wearables can improve running economy.

Danna Chavez Hernandez

Danna ChavezHernandez is a senior biomedical engineering Bachelors student with a concentration in medical device design at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Danna developed an interest in MATLAB-based physiological signal analysis through her coursework and research experience. She enjoys exploring how engineering tools can be used to better interpret human health data. Danna especially interested in applying these skills to solve real-world problems in the healthcare industry.
