Visalakshi Chockalingam
Visalakshi Chockalingam, Ph.D. Candidate in Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. she holds a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology (BMEBT) from UMass Lowell and a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, India.
Prior to her doctoral studies, she spent three years in industry at Amgen, where she worked on new product development and final product testing for combination drug-delivery devices, including design verification and validation testing, test fixture design (SolidWorks, 3D printing), and LabVIEW-based test system development, in accordance with ISO 13485 and 21 CFR 820 medical device regulations.
Her current doctoral research focuses on Neuromuscular Coordination and Posture Control in Concussed Athletes, with a particular emphasis on muscle synergy. Specifically, she studies how concussion disrupts the way the central nervous system coordinates movement, across three complementary paradigms: standing balance, dynamic walking, and VR-based multisensory perturbation, with the broader goal of developing an objective, measurable biomarker that can complement the subjective clinical tools currently used in return-to-play decisions. Her broader research interests span biomedical imaging, ultrasound-based muscle analysis, concussion assessment, biomechanics, and combinational medical devices, and past projects have included ultrasound imaging of muscle dynamics, laser speckle rheology for viscoelastic characterization, and the development of wearable sensors and economical electrochemical detectors.
Outside of the lab, Visalakshi enjoy reading novels, painting, and traveling to explore new cultures and experiences.
